THE OLTON PROJECT – BEGINNING OF GUIDANCE

The Beginning of Guidance

This course is one of the most popular one year courses in the UK. It will equip you with authentic Islamic knowledge taken from reliable scholars with unbroken chains of transmission back to our Prophet and Messenger Muhammad. Over a period of 30 weeks, you will study through a variety of essential subjects that will improve your relationship with Allah and assist you in every part of your life – including with your family, spouse, children, and friends, at work, and whilst interacting with the whole of society. The course caters for men and women – and will be taught in a mature, comfortable and non-discriminative environment.

Note: in case of a lockdown due to Coronavirus, classes will continue online.

Aqidah (Islamic Creed)

During this time of confusion and darkness where the Muslims have begun to cut off from their relationship with Allah, this course aims to increase one’s understanding of sound Islamic beliefs through the study of methodologies of mainstream Islamic beliefs, and by explaining the centrality of Allah’s transcendence and the greatness of His Messengers. Students will learn about the attributes of Allah, Muslim belief concerning the messengers, angels, the scripture which Allah revealed, the Day of Resurrection, and creed concerning destiny.

Examples of things that we shall study: What is revelation? What is the task of Prophets and Messengers? What is the role of the angels? How many scriptures did Allah reveal?  What is free-will? What will happen to me in the grave? What will be the Day of Judgement be like? Does Paradise have a description? Is Hell eternal?

Hanafi Fiqh: Purification, Salah, Ramadan, Zakat & Hajj

Students will gain a necessary and detailed understanding of Islamic Jurisprudence (Hanafi Fiqh) related to the acts of worship (i.e. Tahara, Prayer, Zakat, Fasting, and the Pilgrimage). We shall be going through Ascent to Felicity which was written by the eminent 11th century Hanafi scholar, Abu al-Ikhlas al-Shurunbulali. It is a concise yet comprehensive primer in creed and jurisprudence which spans all five pillars of Islam.

Examples of things that we shall study: How do I make wudhu exactly how the Prophet performed wudhu? When is it obligatory to perform ghusl? What are the rulings concerning menstruation? Can I get married straight after divorce? How do I shorten the prayer if I am a traveller? How much do I have to pay for Zakat? How do I make up missed fasts in Ramadan? Are injections allowed in Ramadan? Am I allowed to donate organs after I die?

Hadith: The 40 of Imam al-Nawwawi

The collection of Forty Hadith by al-Imam al-Nawawi is one of the most accepted and renowned works of Hadith ever compiled. Its significance lay in the fact that these selected forty hadiths comprise the main essential and fundamental concepts of Islam which, in turn, construct the minimum level of required revealed knowledge for every single Muslim. Students will be honoured to study hadith which comprehensively covers every key principle of this religion. This subject will teach the seeker to reconnect to Allah through acts of virtue, honour and nobility.

Examples of things that we shall study: How can I rectify my intentions? What is the importance of earning halal? What actions will lead to Allah accepting my supplications? Can Allah really forgive a sinner like me? How does my relationship with family, friends and neighbours affect my relationship with Allah? What actions will draw me closer to the Lord? How do I protect myself in a time filled with such difficulties? Who truly represents the religion?

Purification of the Heart

In a time when many of us have become distracted from worship, our hearts have become distant from the Creator, and our souls seek cure from spiritual illnesses such as envy, lust, ostentation, and a variety of other things which plague us at work, at home, whilst on social media, whilst socialising, and even during times of leisure, Imam Ghazali’s The Beginning of Guidance (Bidaya al-Hidaya) is a highly motivational manual which details the fundamentals of acquiring guidance through God-consciousness (taqwa) and purity.  The three sections of this book are on obedience, refraining from disobedience, and the etiquette of companionship with the Creator and with creation. The book is one of Imam al-Ghazali’s finest works, and it helps the believer to create a closer relationship to his Lord.

Examples of things that we shall study: How do I stay away from sins? How do I improve the condition of my heart and remove spiritual illnesses? How can I get rid of jealousy and anger at home and in the office? How do I prevent myself from watching pornography? Does earning haram affect the state of my heart? What earns the anger and wrath of Allah? Can we really live a pure life in a time where Haram has become so easy? What are the major sins? Do false claimants exist in our time? How do we protect ourselves from charlatans?

Teacher & Instructor

Shaykh Mohammed Aslam is from among the most popular and respected Muslim scholars in Europe. In a time of mass confusion where people have lost direction, darkness has spread, and despair has overcome society, he has worked tirelessly to reconnect the hearts of this Ummah back to the beautiful Prophet of this Ummah through instilling hope, reverence, love, and honour for this religion into the souls of thousands of Muslims from various backgrounds across the world.  Born and raised in Birmingham, UK, Shaykh Aslam descends from a learned and righteous family. He began studying the religion from a young age at Central Jamia Mosque Ghamkol Sharif and was honoured to have memorised the Qur’an in his teens. After benefiting from Mufti Akbar Zirak and some of the most talented scholars in Britain, he decided to embark on a path of seeking Sacred Knowledge.

He ultimately traveled to the blessed lands of Shaam where he enrolled in Damascus University and

immersed himself in extensive private studies with some of the greatest scholars of our age. After graduating from Damascus University, he enrolled in Mahad al-Fath al-Islami, one of the most distinguished and illustrious Islamic seminaries in the world, from where he graduated after six years of full-time study. Between 1999 – 2006, Shaykh Mohammed Aslam was blessed to have sat in the blessed company of hundreds of renowned ‘ulema and sages such as Shaykh ‘Abd al-Razzaq al-Halabi, Shaykh Muhammad Adib al-Kallas, Shaykh ‘Abdullah Sirajuddin, Shaykh ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Shaghouri, Shaykh Mustafa Turkmani, Shaykh Shukri al-Luhafi, Shaykh Abul Hasan al-Kurdi, Shaykh Muhammad ‘Aywad, Shaykh Muhammad Sa’id Ramadan al-Buti, Shaykh Salih al-Hamawi, Sayyid Muhammad ibn ‘Alawi al-Makki, Shaykh Muhammad Zakariyya al-Bukhari, Shaykh Ahmad al-Habbal, Shaykh Salim Hammami, and many others.

He was highly praised by many scholars residing in the Levant for his exceptional dedication to knowledge and his love for the Sunna. After returning to the UK, he quickly became renowned in Birmingham for his brilliant youth work, his outstanding gift in making the religion relevant to the generality of the Muslim Umma, his creativity and forward-thinking, and his strength in calling to Allah (Da’wah).
