Tajwid – Correction Recitation of the Qur’an
Allah, Lord of the Heavens and the earth addressed His noble Messenger ﷺ and said, “And recite the Qur’an in a distinct and measured tone (Tartil).” (Surah al-Muzammil) Bara’ ibn ‘Azib said, “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recite Surah al-Tin in the Night Prayer (‘Isha). I have never heard anyone with a voice more beautiful than his!” The Prophet ﷺ encouraged the believing folk to study the Qur’an and to recite it correctly and said, “The best of you are those who study the Qur’an and teach it,” and “The one who recites a letter from the Book of Allah will have a reward and that reward will be multiplied by ten. I do not say that Alif Lam Mim is a letter. Rather Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter and Mim is a letter so increase your recitation of the Qur’an to gain these merits.” (Tirmidhi)
Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas said, “It is more beloved to me to recite one chapter of the Quran in a distinct and measured manner than to recite the entire Qur’an without it.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “The one who recites the Qur’an with expertise and fluency will be among the noble scribes of the angels. And the one who stutters and for whom it is difficult will have double the reward. (Bukhari) Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr ibn al-‘As reported that the Prophet ﷺ said, “It will be said to the People of the Qur’an, ‘Recite and ascend. Recite in the manner that you would in the Dunya. Your station will be at the last verse you recite.’” (Tirmidhi)
What is Tajwid?
The literal meaning of Tajwid is precision, accuracy, and excellence. In the science of Qur’anic recitation – Tajwid means, “Reciting the Qu’ran in the same manner as it was revealed to the Messenger of Allah.” For a person to do this, he must give each letter its due in terms of characteristics and articulate it from its correct place. Imam al-Qurtubi said that a person should not hurry or rush in his recitation of the Qur’an. Rather, he should recite in a clear and distinct manner which allows for him to reflect upon the meanings of The Qur’an.
What will I study?
The main focus of our Tajwid Beginners course will be improving the recitation and articulation of students, removing mistakes, correcting errors, and assisting them in becoming better reciters of the Qur’an. Each student will begin from Surah al-Fatiha and then move on to the final Surahs of the 30th Juz.
Students will learn some of the main rules of Tajwid but more importantly, they will improve their application and have an opportunity to recite one on one with the teacher in every session. We feel there are many people who place great focus on the theory of recital but neglect practical application which means that students may know the general rules of recitation but are unaware of how to apply them whilst reciting the Qur’an – just the way that a person may know all the theory on how to drive a car but remains clueless on how to practically drive a car.
